Roy Thomas To Appear At The London Super Comic Con 2013

More excitement (and we’ve been sitting on this for a few weeks) with the news that, following on from the huge success earlier this year of the Super London Comic Convention, the organisers and PS Artbooks have teamed up to bring over our very own Roy Thomas as one of the major Guests of Honour.

In case you didn’t know (hey, where you been, man?!), Roy is Series Consultant for our comics-based subsidiary PS Artbooks, where he is overseeing our reprint line of pre-Code anthology titles and much missed golden- and silver-age heroes and heroines. Roy made his name as Stan Lee’s first successor as Marvel Editor-in-Chief and he remains a popular figure on the scene through the indispensable Alter Ego magazine, for which he wrote way back in the 1960s and which he re-launched in 1999 for TwoMorrows Publishing.

He is rightfully held in the highest regard for his writing stints on The Avengers, The Uncanny X-Men and, of course, for introducing Robert E. Howard’s sandal-clad Conan The Barbarian to four-colour fans the world over. As well as speaking with attendees,  appearing on panels and succumbing to an Interview, Roy will be at PS’s double-stand to sign and personalise copies of The Heap, Planet Comics, Classic Phantom Lady and my and Paul’s early copies of Marvel’s Conan comicbook.

We’ve got a few other surprises but we’re keeping shtum on those until the Convention. Roy was awarded the Alley Award in 1961, and the Shazam Award in 1971, 1973 and 1974. He was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2011. In short, he da man. Come meet him—and us—next February.

About The London Super Comic Con 2013
After the success of the inaugural London Super Comic Convention in February 2012, the team have been working hard on putting together a blend of creators that will ensure that L.S.C.C. 2013 continues to meet our attendees’ expectations. Last year they had 50 Featured Creators from the US, Europe and the UK with a blend of work spanning the modern, bronze and silver ages.

Similar to last year they will be announcing the names of creators throughout the run up to the show. With this being the first of many creator announcements. The next 10 Spotlight Guests will be announced next month (October).

The first 10 Spotlight Guests:
Neal Adams, Mark Buckingham, Peter David, Gary Erskine, Klaus Janson, Bob McLeod, George Perez, Matteo Scalera, Roy Thomas, Herb Trimpe

For full details about the event to be held at the Excel Centre, London on February 23rd & 24th, 2013, and to buy tickets please visit the official website at

As we named dropped three new PS titles above we best tell you a little about them….

Roy Thomas Presents… The Heap – Volume One

On October 12, 1918, Baron Von Emmelmann, a German pilot, was shot down over Wausau Swamp in Poland. Dying from his wounds, his body slowly merged with the morass. Willing to live forever more by remembering his wealth, social position, loving wife, and newborn baby he hadn’t seen yet, he swore he would return to human form someway somehow. After 20 years, he rose and encountered Skywolf. At first he seemed to be a bad guy, but he has fought the Nazis and the Japanese during WWII. He ate farm animals whole so he could breathe due to the oxygen in the animals’ blood. Now for the first time Roy Thomas presents the original muck monster collected together. Though he looks like a rip-off, The Heap was created in 1942 and featuring fantastic comic artwork by Infantino, Starr, Bolle, Peddy, Leav, Barry et al.

The first volume of the The Heap features a brand new 5000 word essay by Roy Thomas and a new illustration by American artist Mike Ploog. This title will be available in both standard Bookshop and Deluxe Slipcase (featuring Signed Print by both Thomas & Ploog) editions.

Estimated Publication Date: December 2012.
ISBN: 978-1-84863-463-3 (Bookshop) and 978-1-84863-464-0 (Deluxe Slipcase).
